Alliance for I-69 Texas Board Meeting
Visiting Mexican Officials in Tamaulipas, Mexico

WESLACO (or CIUDAD VICTORIA, MEXICO), The Alliance for I-69 Texas recently met in Weslaco, Texas in the Rio Grande Valley to hold a regularly scheduled Board of Directors Meeting.  Uncommon, however, was the special opportunity to travel into Mexico and meet with the Honorable Gustavo Cardenas, Federal Mexican Senator, and Lic. Luis Rafael Apperti Llovet, Director General of SEDEEM (the Mexican equivalent of the Department of Transportation for the state of Tamaulipas, Mexico.  Discussions centered on the integral planning between Mexico and the United States necessary in order to construct I-69 in a timely manner.  Mr. Llovet presented a four-year capital plan proposal that would upgrade a significant number of highways in Tamaulipas, Mexico which would directly connect into I-69 at Laredo, McAllen, and Brownsville.

“Texas is our largest trading partner, and it is imperative that we provide adequate infrastructure in Tamaulipas, and indeed all of Mexico, in order to support the movement of goods,” said Senator Cardenas.  “We are committed to the upgrading of our road and rail infrastructure, which will provide great capacity for the additional economic growth of our state as a direct result of the North American Free Trade Agreement.”

The Alliance is actively working on development of a new website to help communicate and promote the need for the timely implementation of I-69.  The new site will be unveiled at the Alliance’s Annual Meeting on December 12th, 2000, and contain timely information related to the status of various projects related to the I-69 corridor.

“As we move towards the next transportation authorization bill, it will be imperative that the state demonstrate the commitment and progress made to date on I-69, “ said George Beatty, President of the Chamber of Commerce of the Greater Houston Partnership. “The new website under development will provide impetus for the cooperation and support of elected officials and private businesses along the corridor.”

The Alliance for I-69 Texas is a membership-based organization created in 1994 to promote the development of I-69 in Texas.  Membership includes government and business interests from 34 counties in East and South Texas, with administrative support provided by the Greater Houston Partnership.
