I-69 Welcomes State Transportation Commissioner
Briefings Held in Corpus, Houston

HOUSTON, The Alliance for I-69 Texas welcomes State Transportation Commissioner Johnny Johnson to briefings in Corpus Christi Oct. 12, and Houston Oct. 17, to discuss the importance of the passage of Proposition 15 in November.  The proposition, if passed, will establish the Texas Mobility Fund, allowing the Texas Department of Transportation to leverage highway funds and move on road projects faster than has been possible.  This leverage could give the state $5 billion to $6 billion more for roads over the next 10 years.

The Corpus Christi meeting will be held Oct. 12 at the Holiday Inn-Emerald Beach, from 11:30 a.m. – 1 p.m., (contact Lucy Reta, 361-881-1800 for program information), while the Houston meeting will be held Oct. 17 at the Westchase Hilton, 9999 Westheimer, at 9 a.m. (contact Dominique Lamay, 713-461-9378 for program information).

“Building a new interstate highway – over half of which will be in Texas – is a big project,” said Helen Walker, Victoria County Judge and president of the Alliance for I-69 Board of Directors.  “Passage of Proposition 15 will give Texas a big tool to get transportation projects done.  Significant portions of the I-69 project could be eligible for funding under the Texas Mobility Fund and under new authority granted the Texas Transportation Commission by Proposition 15.  The passage of Proposition 15 can make I-69 and other major transportation projects a reality many years before they will otherwise be realized under existing funding authority.”

The Alliance for I-69 Texas is a membership-based organization created in 1994 to promote the development of I-69 in Texas.  Membership includes government and business interests from 34 counties in East and South Texas, with administrative support provided by the Greater Houston Partnership.
