Federal Highway Allocations Announced

$7 Million Included in Funding Bill for I-69

HOUSTON,  The Appropriations Committee of the U.S. House of Representatives recently completed work on the FY 2003 Transportation Appropriations Bill, which included $7 million for projects along the Interstate 69 Corridor in Texas.  Specifically, the bill included:

·         $3 million for I-69 Corridors 18 and 20 in Texas,

·         $.5 million for the interchange of U.S. 59 and FM 2919 near Rosenberg,

·         $2.5 million for the West Laredo Multimodal Trade Corridor, and

·         $1 million for the Donna-Rio Bravo International Border Crossing.

“We are pleased that despite a reduction of federal obligations in every state for transportation in FY 2003 compared to FY 2002 funding levels, funding for the I-69 Corridor in Texas increased,” said Helen Walker, Victoria County Judge and Chairman of the Alliance for I-69 Texas.  “We appreciate the longstanding support of I-69 by the Texas congressional delegation and, in particular, the leadership of Congressman Tom DeLay, co-chairman of the multi-state I-69 congressional caucus.”

“We also look forward to working closely with our members of Congress next year during the reauthorization of the federal transportation bill, known as TEA-21,” Walker added.  “Clearly we need to establish a funding mechanism to direct resources to develop and build truly international trade corridors, such as I-69.  This funding is critical to ensure that our country’s infrastructure will be able to support the growing trade with Mexico and Canada.”

The Alliance for I-69 Texas is a membership-based organization created in 1994 to promote the development of I-69 in Texas.  Membership includes government and business interests from 34 counties in East and South Texas, with administrative support provided by the Greater Houston Partnership.
