The Nevada Highway Patrol was investigating four fatal crashes in less than five hours at night, including one impaired driving accident.

Three of the crashes were in the Las Vegas Valley, while the fourth was in Laughlin, Highway Patrol spokesman Travis Smaka said on Saturday morning.

Soldiers were called in for the first crash around 9:35 p.m. Friday at Sunset Road and the northbound 215 Beltway slip road, Smaka said. The accident involved a Fiat and a BMW.

One person was taken to the university medical center, where they died, Smaka said.

The following accident was reported at 11:18 p.m. Friday on the Highway 95 slip road northbound on Lake Mead Boulevard. Investigators believe a motorcyclist “failed to negotiate the turn” on the ramp, Smaka said.

The biker was thrown from the motorcycle and was killed, he said.

A car was involved in the third crash, to which soldiers were called at 1:05 a.m. Saturday on State Highway 163 and Casino Drive, in Laughlin, Smaka said. Investigators believe that only one vehicle hit a wall.

The driver of the vehicle was taken to a hospital in Bullhead, Ariz., Where they died, Smaka said.

The fourth accident was reported just before 2:05 a.m. on Interstate 15 southbound, north of Lake Mead Boulevard. The accident happened when a car swerved from the roadway and ended up in a ravine, where it overturned, Smaka said.

The driver was thrown from the car and died at the scene, Smaka said. A passenger in the car was taken to the university medical center in critical condition.

Investigators believe drunkenness was a factor in the fourth crash, Smaka said.

Further information on the accidents was not immediately available.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.

A North Dakota Highway Patrol soldier is on administrative leave pending an investigation into a September 7 shooting that killed a Montana man.

Craig Knutson, 45, of Billings, MT, was shot once by Private Steven Mayer after a chase in Morton County, Major Tom Iverson said on September 8. Knutson was alone in the vehicle, which Iverson described as a pickup truck. He died at the scene.

Morton County MPs answered a call from a reckless driver on the freeway around 7:43 p.m. on September 7, Iverson said.

MPs attempted a traffic stop, but Knutson continued east at freeway speed, then slowed when a MP east of the chase deflated the front left tire of the pickup truck with a tape spiked.

Mayer used his vehicle to force Knutson’s vehicle to turn and stop on the freeway about 13 miles west of Mandan. The soldier parked in front of the van to prevent it from moving, Iverson said.

Mayer gave Knutson “several strong verbal orders to put up his hands” and told MPs that Knutson had a gun, the major said. A revolver was found in the vehicle, according to the patrol.

Details of what led Mayer to shoot Knutson were not immediately disclosed.

It is not known why Knutson did not stop, if he was in the vehicle when he was shot, or if the soldier saw the gun in his hand or somewhere in the vehicle.

A man who allegedly fired several shots at police officers, police dogs and a police helicopter on Monday evening, forcing the closure of Interstate 15 and Interstate 70 near Beaver, has been taken into custody . No one was injured, according to the Utah Highway Patrol.

According to the Utah Highway Patrol, an officer attempted to stop a car traveling at high speed – going 100 mph in an 80 mph zone – near the northbound mile marker 117 at about 5.13 p.m. The vehicle fled and the UHP soldier fled for follow-up. At approximately mile post 122, the fleeing car entered the median and stopped, and the driver fled on foot through the southbound lanes and into the foothills west of the road. I-15.

Two passengers in the car were taken into custody and the I-15 was stopped for several hours.

About fifty police officers from several police departments joined in the search for the suspect. According to the UHP, the suspect repeatedly fired a handgun at canine teams and a police helicopter. Canine teams withdrew and tactical teams from the State Department of Public Safety, Beaver County, Iron County and St. George were deployed – and police say the suspect fired multiple times right now.

The suspect was located by the helicopter and, when the tactical teams responded, surrendered. No one was injured, according to UHP.

  • Bill Carey is the founder and executive director of Tennessee History for Kids.

I suspect most of us don’t think much about what life would have been like without the Interstate Highway System. When you think about it, we realize that most of us wouldn’t live where we live and vacation like we take our vacations.

The US government began funding the Interstate Highway System in 1956. The idea was to make it easier to travel from one part of the country to another in the event of a national military emergency. Designed for speed and with limited access, America’s highways were modeled after a German highway called the Autobahn.

The way the interstate system was paid is a bit complicated and has changed over the years. Suffice it to say that its primary funding mechanism was, and still is, the gasoline tax.

The interstate system plan closely followed a U.S. government publication known as the Yellow book, which you can still see on the Internet. The Yellow book mapped out the general routes of the national interstate system and showed where freeway corridors would be built in each American city.

CALLAWAY COUNTY – Over the Labor Day weekend, the Missouri State Highway Patrol saw an increase in accidents compared to last year’s vacation.

The time frame MSHP considers to be an activity on Labor Day weekend is 6 p.m. Friday until 11:59 p.m. Monday.

According to the MSHP, the 2021 traffic statistics include the following:

  • 351 accidents
  • 103 injured
  • 7 dead
  • 108 CFA
  • 71 drug-related arrests

F Troop, which patrols most of the KOMU 8 observation area, says it investigated 49 vehicle accidents, including six injured. Ten people were arrested for DWI.

One of the deaths occurred in the central Missouri area. Detroit’s mother, Renee Honor, died in Callaway County after her vehicle left Interstate 70, hit an embankment and overturned. Her son, who was in the vehicle, was slightly injured.

Last year, MSHP reported 278 accidents during the same period, including 140 injured. There were 146 arrests for impaired driving. In addition, they reported 18 deaths last year.

MSHP also released this year’s Labor Day preliminary nautical statistics:

  • 7 accidents
  • 4 injuries
  • 1 death
  • 6 IBW
  • 0 drowning
  • 18 drug-related arrests

The MSHP reported 20 boating accidents last year, including six injuries. There were seven arrests for navigation while intoxicated. Additionally, they reported one death last year and no drowning.

F Troop soldiers investigated four boating accidents, three of which were injured. Four people were arrested for IBW.

Some travelers say the ride home after the long weekend went pretty well.

Brandon Bartels drove four hours through Missouri from Kansas City to St. Louis.

Bartels said he remains on the lookout for vacation traffic.

“You watch out for the cops, you watch out for the trucks on the side of the road that have broken down so you want to get to the side,” Bartels said. “But pretty much the traffic has been nice so far.”

He said he also saw a lot of state soldiers on the highways.

“I saw a few cops arrest a few people,” Bartels said. “But no accidents so far.”

HANAHAN – Private Nick Pye of the SC Highway Patrol was nearly killed last year when a wrong way driver crashed into his vehicle.

Pye, now a spokesperson for Patrol’s Troop 6, and another soldier were shot on Interstate 26 near Cosgrove Avenue in North Charleston around 5:15 a.m. on December 27. He and the other patroller were struck by a car heading east in the left lane westbound. Pye said in an interview with the Hanahan Police Department.

He said he wanted the tri-county community to understand the dangers of distracted driving and impaired driving and how quickly things can escalate. At the time of the crash, Pye was a field training officer educating the other soldier. Pye was in the passenger seat.

On a bend in the freeway, a person driving under the influence was driving in the wrong direction. Both saw headlights pop up about 15 feet ahead, moving squarely toward their car at 60 or 70 mph.

The patroller swerved to the right and the oncoming car slid onto the left side of the vehicle. The soldiers’ right front tire came off.

“In this job you definitely have near-death experiences, but it’s just an experience that comes to mind,” Pye said. “If my partner hadn’t been careful, then I definitely wouldn’t have survived.”

No one died in the accident. Pye, his partner, and the reverse driver were all injured. Pye and the other patroller are still recovering, he said.

Reverse crashes don’t happen often, but they do happen every year.

In August, a 32-year-old woman driving a Hyundai sedan was heading north towards Mount Pleasant on the Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge side towards Charleston, according to the Charleston Police Department. She hit another vehicle head on and died.

Charleston Police are still investigating the accident. Police reports say it is not known which ramp Swain took to get to the wrong side of the bridge.

Berkeley County Sheriff's Deputy 2nd Person Injured in Early Morning Crash

Since January, there have been 160 reverse crashes in the tri-county area, including 88 in Charleston County. In 2020, there were 263 reverse crashes in Charleston, Dorchester and Berkeley counties. There were 260 in 2019.

These accidents combined have injured 500 people and killed 49 over the past three years.

Cpl. Tyler Tidwell, another highway patrolman in the southern tip of the state, said the deaths and injuries from these crashes were impacting loved ones across South Carolina.

“One of the most difficult parts of our job is going to someone’s house, knocking on the door and telling them that their loved one is no longer there,” he said. “If the collision is preventable, then this is something that shouldn’t happen.”

Tidwell said wrong way accidents can be very different. A car driving on the wrong side of the freeway is usually a much more serious accident than a reverse accident on a two-lane highway, he said, although both are classified the same.

Driving under the influence is the number one cause of driving the wrong way on highways, Pye said.

“Some of the Charleston area ramps can be confusing because they’ve grown so much,” he said. “But you don’t get on the freeway and travel several miles the wrong way without something interfering with your driving.”

But reverse crashes reflect the dangers of the road, Pye said.

“Driving is the most dangerous thing a normal person would do on a daily basis,” he said. “Until it’s in people’s heads, we’re going to keep having these fatal crashes.”

Pye thinks his accident is a reminder to be careful of the road, he said. Even if a person drives carefully, they should be wary of those around them who are not so responsible, he said.

Tesla Model 3 crashed into a Florida Highway Patrol car, allegedly with autopilot on.

– A Tesla crash investigation has been extended to include an accident between a Tesla Model 3 and a Florida Highway Patrol car.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, a 2012 Mercedes GLK350 broke down on Interstate 4 in Orlando around 5 a.m. on August 28.

The Florida Soldier pulled over to assist the Mercedes on the highway when the Tesla Model 3 crashed into the Soldier’s Dodge Charger. The soldier was out of his car and was not hit when the Tesla struck the Dodge Charger and then the broken down Mercedes.

The Tesla Model 3 driver said the autopilot was on when the vehicle struck the police car with its hazard lights on.

Highway Patrol says the Model 3 barely missed the soldier, who was not injured, but Mercedes and Tesla drivers sustained minor injuries.

The crash has now been added to a federal investigation seeking answers as to why Tesla vehicles crash into parked emergency vehicles. These incidents allegedly occurred when the autopilot was engaged and the drivers were completely removed from their driving responsibilities.

Federal investigation into the Tesla crash

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration opened its investigation in August to include approximately 765,000 Tesla vehicles, including the 2014-2021 Tesla Model Y, Model X, Model S and Model 3 vehicles.

The drivers apparently had no idea of their surroundings as they did nothing to avoid crashing into fire trucks and police vehicles. These vehicles had their hazard lights activated and many accidents occurred even though flares, traffic signs, cones and other warnings were in place.

NHTSA was aware of 11 crashes involving emergency vehicles and the use of Tesla’s autopilot or traffic-sensing cruise control before the Florida Highway Patrol crash. Those 11 crashes would have caused 17 injuries and one death, but a recent crash in New York could change those statistics.

Jean Louis of Cambria Heights, New York, was killed while trying to change a tire on the side of the Long Island Expressway in Queens. The July 26 accident happened when Louis, 52, was struck by a Tesla Model Y SUV.

NHTSA sent investigators to the crash scene, but safety regulators did not say whether the autopilot was on when the crash occurred.

Tesla is warning drivers to keep their hands on the wheels and their eyes on the roads if autopilot is on. The autopilot is a driving assistance system and whatever its name, does not make a vehicle completely autonomous.

CarComplaints.com will update our website with the results of the Tesla survey.
