MDOT unveils Lynyrd Skynyrd Highway signs in functional tribute to tragedy

The Mississippi Department of Transportation recently unveiled two new special highway signs honoring members of Lynyrd Skynyrd who lost their lives in the infamous plane crash.

The unveiling took place on Sunday, November 15 with a crowd of fans in attendance for the ceremony.

Each sign will be both a tribute to the group and a useful exit sign, pointing motorists to the location of the fatal plane crash that occurred on October 20, 1977. The signs were placed on the Interstate 55 near McComb and Hwy 568 near Gillsburg, respectively.

Until the signs were erected, fans looking to visit the crash site had to rely on conjecture and limited granite markers in Gillsburg to find the site, which is in a heavily forested area with no reception. cell near the Louisiana border just 8 miles west of Interstate 55.

“People were always asking where the crash site was. It’s very difficult to access and there are no markings, ”said Bobby McDaniel, president of the Lynyrd Skynyrd Monument Project.

In the crash, 20 of the 26 people on board survived, but the incident claimed the lives of singer Ronnie Van Zant, guitarist Steve Gaines, his sister and backing vocalist Cassie Gaines and assistant road director Dean Kilpatrick. Pilot Walter McCreary and co-pilot William Gray were also killed in the crash.

The signs are the result of a bill passed by Mississippi lawmakers that requires the state to provide exit signs for the monument to the wanted accident. Among those supporting the bill was Republican Representative Beckie Currie, who was a nursing student at the time of the crash and worked at the hospital where some of the victims were brought after the terrible incident. She said many hospital workers worked all night to help crash victims without realizing some of them were famous.

“I spent a lot of time in the summer… listening to Lynyrd Skynyrd,” Currie told the Charlotte Observer.

“… and having a lot, a lot, way too much fun.”
