Ranaghat, West Bengal:
Two men were arrested on a highway in the Nadia district of West Bengal for allegedly attempting to hijack vehicles and steal travelers while dressed as women, police said today.
The two would pose as women stranded on the freeway in the middle of the night and stop passing vehicles, they said.
In the early hours of Tuesday, a police patrol car spotted them on National Road 34 in the area of Ranaghat police station in Bengal, officials told the Press Trust of India news agency.
Seeing the police vehicle, the two tried to escape, they said, adding that the police chased and grabbed them.
Police said they saw two women waiting in the dark on the freeway and approached them for help, but as soon as they started running suspicion was raised.
When it turned out to be men dressed as women, police officers on duty were taken aback, they said.
They were discovered to be trying to entrap vehicles on the highway, either to hijack them or to steal travelers, police said.
