Ohio State Highway Patrol investigates fatal Interstate 71 crash

MANSFIELD — The Ohio State Highway Mansfield Highway Patrol Station is investigating a fatal two-vehicle crash today at 2:24 pm The crash occurred on I71 northbound at mile 159 in Perry Twp. in Richland County. The accident happened when 65-year-old James Covrett of Delaware, Oh. was outside his vehicle changing a tire on the broken down horse trailer he was carrying. Lisa Coder, 39, also from Delaware, was also traveling with Mr Covrett. While Mr. Covrett was changing the tire, a red 2006 Peterbilt semi-trailer driven by Paulo Dasilva, 67, of Newark, New Jersey, pulled off the right side of the road, colliding with the horse trailer and Mr. Covrett. The semi-trailer continued on all three lanes of traffic before coming to a stop in the median.

Mr. Covrett was pronounced dead at the scene by the Richland County Coroner. Mr. Dasilva suffered no injuries as a result of the accident. Ms. Coder was outside the vehicle at the time of the accident, but suffered no injuries. Three horses were in the trailer but were not injured in the accident either.

The accident is currently the subject of further investigation. ODOT, Richland County Coroner’s Office, Troy and Washington Twp. Fire and EMS, and Shelly Smith and Son’s Towing responded to the scene. The road was closed during the initial investigation but is now reopened for travel.
