SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) – The lanes of Interstate Highway 280 were closed Tuesday afternoon following a fatal incident involving a pedestrian, the California Highway Patrol reported.

At least two southbound lanes were closed and traffic slowed significantly on Route 280 southbound and US Route 101 southbound.

Officers from the San Francisco Police Department and the CHP were investigating the incident as suicide.

The San Francisco Fire Department said two nurses on leave saw the person fall on the freeway, but did not see if the person jumped.

Nurses began CPR, but the person died at the scene, firefighters said.
