State Highway Patrol soldier injured in North Olmsted chase, police say


NORTH OLMSTED, Ohio – Two drivers crashed into a State Highway Patrol soldier’s car at a freeway construction site on Interstate 480 Wednesday night as they attempted to evade North Olmsted police , police said.

The soldier was treated for minor injuries and released in the incident which occurred around 8:30 p.m. on Interstate 480 near Great Northern Boulevard, North Olmsted Police Chief Bob Wagner said.

Police initially received a call regarding several cars being driven recklessly at the North Olmsted RTA Park N Ride on Great North Boulevard near Butternut Ridge Road, Wagner said.

Police went to the parking lot and blocked the exit so they could investigate.

Two of the cars in the parking lot headed for officers blocking the exit. Officers moved their cars out of the way as both cars drove over the grass and headed into the westbound lane of I-480, Wagner said.

Both cars crashed into Highway Patrol Sgt. Ronald Bornino’s cruiser as it was parked with its overhead lights on at a highway construction site, police and highway patrol sergeant. Ray Santiago said.

Paramedics took him to St. John’s University Hospitals Medical Center for treatment of minor injuries, Santiago said. He left the hospital that night.

One of the drivers left his car at the crash scene and fled on foot, Santiago said. The other driver drove to Stearns Road, the next exit, and left the car.
